When we start our seeds for the larger DFT hydroponics system we like to use General Hydroponics Rainforest system. The GH Rainforest is an aeroponics system that agitates the water and creates a very fine mist of nutrient solution for the plant’s roots. The Rainforest aeroponics system is great because it is quite versatile. It has various kits that can accommodate several large plants or kits that can accommodate many small plants such as can be seen in the video where we used 2″ net cups to start our seeds.
Aeroponics systems tend to produce the most growth of all hydroponics systems because of the favorable amount of both nutrients and oxygen. A drawback in aeroponics is that units with sprayer nozzles can often gunk up and need to be cleaned or replaced. The GH Rainforest does a great job getting around that problem.
We purchased our General Hydroponics Rainforest as a whole unit but after looking at the parts we believe you could rather easily just purchase the Vortex Sprayer unit and use it to create your own aeroponics unit if you felt so inclined. Not everyone wants to build their own DIY hydroponics unit however and that is where kits such as the RF are so great.
We tend to use our larger DFT Hydroponics Build #1 for growing fresh salad greens and a few herbs. Because that unit is designed to also accommodate 2″ net cups, it works wonderfully with the GH Rainforest. If you fill the net cups with expanded clay pebbles such as hydrocorn they tend to produce a capillary effect and draw moisture from the aeroponic environment within the unit and in most cases they wet the hydrocorn enough to germinate seed spinkled into the clay pebbles. We top it all off by adding a little plastic cup on top to the keep the humidity high for the seed to sprout. So far it works wonderfully.
We light our GH Rainforest aeroponics unit with a LED UFO style light. These lights are just the right size for one of these systems. Any good plant light source would work but we really like the benefits of plant LED lights. We recently purchased one at a very reasonable price from amazon that performed better than expected (see the Recommended Products link in the menu bar above.)
The Recommended Products link above also has links to the GH Rainforest systems themselves. We think highly enough of them to recommend them and they played a role in how we designed our DFT system to work in tandem with one another. So if aeroponic gardening interests you definitely check out the Rainforest system.
